The cinema industry in India has been on the rise up to the present period. There was an increase of about 8% of total screens in India in 2017 alone. Meanwhile, two-thirds of this increased penetration came from multiplexes, while only one third came from single screens. Although more cinema halls have been added during 2017, occupancy rates have hardly increased due to steep tax rates combined with limited exhibition avenues and no proper cultural programs that is mandatory for every theatre around the country. The average foreign film screen count has also declined by 6% with no major releases scheduled up until 2019, resulting in lack of quality content taking away market share from small players. The Indian audience remains a challenging one to please as they have a short attention span and a particular preference for English content. In 2017, India had more than 3500 screens, of which more than 1350 were digital screens. In March 2013, IMAX announced that it would be bringing its new laser projector based IMAX with Laser system to India. In June 2015, following an investment of $25 million by the company over the course of three years, IMAX officially launched its first Indian theatre in Mumbai at Yash Raj Films-owned Eros International multiplex to showcase Hollywood films in IMAX format. Weekly attendance across the country stood at around 8,000 for this single theatre. Following the success of the company's last release on IMAX screens, "Black Panther" (February 2018), IMAX announced on 7 March 2018 on Twitter that it would be opening another 2 first-run theatres in India at Yash Raj Films-owned Eros International multiplex in Kanpur and PVR Media & Entertainment's multiplex in Mumbai. The second theatre was opened on 18 April 2018. Multiplexes are offshoots of the single-screen cinema halls, which were created to provide more seating capacity. Usually a multiplex is a multi-screen cinema hall, usually having three or more screens, but individual single screens may also be joined together to form a multi-screen complex. Multiplexes are the most common form of cinema halls in India. As of 2010, there were 14,000 screens in India. A megaplex is a multiplex that contains 11 or more screens. The number of multiplexes has increased over the years, although they have been criticised for not changing their schedules and opting for one-and-a-half-hour movies over longer movies. Some multiples have shown a tendency to fill up to capacity at peak hours and then 'dump' a lot of their customers outside the theatre without giving them a chance to watch all their money's worth. Single screens are cinemas that have only one screen. Although still in existence, they have to face stiff competition from the multi-screen complexes. The single-screen cinemas are slowly dying out in India. There were 2,000 single screens in 2007. As of 2010, there were just 904 single seats in the country, mostly in smaller cities and towns. Single-screen cinema halls are usually older buildings, not easily located or well maintained because of which they become less attractive for viewers and there is a steady decline in their numbers. cfa1e77820
